Motif #1 - Rockport, Massachusetts
frozen in time
During our winter recess, Chicago-daughter was feeling the need for a seaside visit
as well as a fresh lobster roll.
A visit to nearby Cape Ann fit the bill.
This little red fishing shack, built in the 1840s, was dubbed "Motif #1" by an artist and painting instructor because of its immense popularity among art students. Painted innumerable times by various artists,
Motif #1 is thought to be North America's most painted building.
Little changed since the 1840's, this charming shack seems to be frozen in time.
The many paintings of this site that hang on walls all over the world
Thanks for dropping in!

ReplyDeleteSo fun to see your photos of Motif #1! I love it. You have brought back memories from when I was there years ago. I have pictures somewhere in a photo album. I need to find them and scan them into my computer. You've also made me hungry for lobster roll. It's my favorite food then I'm on the east coast!
ReplyDeleteand it looks so humble, for all its popularity!
ReplyDeleteI love it too. Very quaint.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I've been to Rockport, but it certainly is a lovely place to visit.
ReplyDeleteThe color and geometry of it make for a beautiful picture. Good one! I bet I'll see it again, in a painting, if it's that popular!
ReplyDelete1840! What did they make lumber out of in those days???? Cement??? I know the wood in our house won't last that long!!!!! Termites will devour it long before even 100 years pass, I guarantee you!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely building. No wonder the artists are attracted to it.
ReplyDeleteI loe these old buildings. The red wood is beautiful!

ReplyDeleteWow, I can see why! Love the rock pilings and the little boats in the harbor. And that wreath! Beautiful. xx
ReplyDeleteGreat building, similar to one I saw in Norway - maybe the same ancestry. But I really love the bier or wall under the building. that looks like it has been there for even longer and will stand well past the loss of this building.
ReplyDeleteA very picturesque spot, beautiful captures!
ReplyDeleteI love these scenes.
ReplyDeleteRockport DID lose the building. In a n'oreaster/blizzard in 1978. It was rebuilt the next year.
