random five from a random week

Happy Friday - and you know what that means
- time for some randomness at A Rural Journal
:-)

1) Fortunately for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, this spot at the top of Bromley mountain will be much prettier (and warmer) when they start hiking through in July and August.

2) I made it through week #1 of this whole Appalachian Trail shin-dig.
Whew - this worrying thing is pretty darned tiring!
Maggie's latest text from somewhere in Georgia - "I'm having an amazing time"
That's good - right?

3) Completely random -
Everything is better with peanut butter...
Just putting it out there

4) Right now, I'm reading Wally Lamb's latest - We Are Water
I'm enjoying it so far - and am always looking for suggestions.
Have you read anything awesome lately?

5) So... Yeah... Candy Crush...
As if I needed one more thing to completely suck up my time.
Anyone else addicted to this incredibly obnoxious game?
I'm going on a Candy Crush detox...

I wish you all a wonderful weekend!

  1. I feel your pain with the worrying :) I purposely stay away from all those games, my time is limited enough. I am starting three new books for the trip, hopefully they are all good. Two are physical books and one is on my iPad. I am most excited to read Anna Quindlen's new one Still Life and Bread Crumbs, that is for the plane.

  2. Karen I'm with you on number five. I'm hooked... but I never pay any money to advance.

  3. That is such an amazing thing that your daughter is doing hiking the Appalacian trail. I have read quite a few books about people doing that. I can imagine though that for you at home, there would be alot of worry time. Thank goodness for cell phones though as that has to slightly help you. Keep us posted on her adventures. WOW what an amazing thing to do. I have never done Candy Crush.... have gotten some invites, but have just never started it.... probably good thing for me. LOL

  8. Candy Crush "bit the dust" a few weeks ago. I found my time was much better spent elsewhere, so ZAP on that app!
Worry and fretting . . . although they say 90% of what we worry about never happens . . . I still fret . . .good words to hear will be, I am home and had the best time ever!

  10. Everything is better with peanut butter. So far, I haven't started Candy Crush -- trying to stay away! "I'm having an amazing time" is a good thing -- even though hard on Moms! I didn't know Lamb had a new book out -- thanks! Happy Friday!

  11. I have very little data time to play with so never entered the Candy Crush Zone.
Moms worry. Just a fact. Have a lovely weekend Karen! xo

  12. Karen,

I like peanut butter spread on apples or bananas. Nutella on bananas is good too.

Earlier this week I finished Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. It had high reviews and made Oprah's book club. It is not a favorite for me. I liked Lambs writing style, but some of the life experiences of the main character were tough. Seems like the last few books I have read dealt with child abuse and worse, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Happy reading and have a wonderful weekend.

  16. Glad to read that Maggie is having a great adventure, Karen, and that she is safely. Recentky completed a walk series by Richard Paul Evans, fictional but still food reading and one more book in the series is due out in May.

  18. Never did get into Candy Crush...saw too many people totally addicted to it. So glad to hear that Maggie is have such a wonderful adventure and I know you will worry the entire journey. We do that, us Mom's. And have you tried to stick peanut butter in the micro and melt it a little....oh my goodness, it steps it up to another level of yumminess.

  19. Well that shot of the Appalachian trek looks very wintery. I bet it would be fabulous in summer time. So happy her trek is going well and you are handling her being on it quite well too. I've never played Candy Crush, I don't have a phone with games like that. I do play a somewhat similar game on Pogo called, Sweet Tooth but don't play that often since as you said you can become addicted to those games.

  22. Hurray for Maggie. I was wondering how she's doing. What a great adventure - wish I was younger! I've read some good books in 2014, but I haven't had time to update my review page - however, I read some good ones in 2013 that I've listed. I'm playing with a new photo editing app that is taking way too much of my time. It's snowing hard here - a powder weekend on the slopes.

  23. Glad your daughter's having a great time. Mom's just can't help but worry can they? I haven't gotten into Candy Crush and I do very little Pinterest. Just takes up too much time.

  24. #1) Gorgeous photo from the Appalachian Trail. What is that cement building in the picture? At first, I thought it was a port-o-potty.

    #6) Have a great weekend!

  25. Darn it! I commented once already and hit the "sign out" button instead of publish....I'll try again.
I have been addicted to Candy Crush since November when my daughter in law introduced it to me on my new phone. I am at level 86....keep in mind, I haven't paid a cent for extra help! I have been at level 86 a week. I can't get out! HELP! I play when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom....I am 58 and am hopelessly addicted! I also love Beejumbled ( a spelling game where you have a bee and the words are jumbled up in a honeycomb....and you are timed....it's fun) and Design This Home....a cute little game where it takes MONTHS to build and furnish a little tiny house....with little people and babies walking and crawling around and changing directions every time they bump into something....but the furniture and wallpaper and carpet and appliances and pictures and windows are just so darn cute!!!! And you get "money" to spend by cleaning your house....right now I have $174,455, but it cost me over $200,000 to build an office onto my house. lol Warning....it's addicting, too!!!

  26. I have not tried out that game. I have heard it is awfully addicting. Love peanut butter and am a fan of Wally Lamb. Thanks for the title, will look for it. Have a great weekend!

  27. So wonderful that you've heard from your daughter. I'm imagining all the awesome views she'll be seeing. Continued prayers for her safe journey.
I LOVE Candy Crush! I had it on my iPad and my hubby bought me a Kindle for Christmas so I started over and now play on both. Addicted? YES!

  29. Good Morning, I was addicted to Candy Crush, too. Got up to the levels where it was so hard to advance and one day I had had enough. I took it off my kindle and haven't looked back since. I am so glad I now have that time to do something productive .... or fun, whichever I wish.

  34. Yes, worrying about our sweet girls! Been there, done that! Mine moved to NYC when she was 20. Yes she was moving in with two friends, but hey, it was not easy on ole Mom & Dad! Later we moved her here to Tucson and left her here in a tiny little apartment with no friends, a new job, and a guy hanging around that was less than acceptable....but we had our own move to make then, to a job in Texas. Scary. She stayed here, eventually met her husband, had our amazing Grandson, and well, we said goodbye to thoughts of retiring in Va! :-) Loved the thoughts of hiking the Appalachian Trail...ALWAYS wanted to hike at least some of it! Nice Random 5 post!
