random five - why 50 is nifty

My birthday is Monday, and I'm going to be 50 - again.
I know, most people would probably stay 49, but I'm good with 50.
I kind of wear it like a badge of honor.
But that's it - I'm staying 50 for the indefinite future.
Besides - staying 50 means not having to do that math in the head thing whenever I try to remember my age.

Anyway -
for this week's random 5, I'm sharing 5 reasons why 50 is nifty.

1) The 20s were all about starting out - finding our way in the world, the 30s were all about the kids,
the 40s were all about the teens (ugh) -
so now the 50s get to be about me.
I've reached a point in my life where I'm pretty comfortable just being me.

2) I've never had much style - and now I really don't care.
When I'm not looking my best, a baseball cap and sunglasses do the trick.

3) I no longer ask myself what I want to be when I grow up.
Yep - I finally figured it out - retired!

4) I'm still young enough to think of myself as still being young enough -
right?

5) I now understand that there are a whole lot of things that I can't control and
I've gained the serenity to accept that - well, mostly
(okay, yeah, maybe the rest comes at 60)

That's it for me this week. We're headed to the Weston Playhouse to
see (a small stage production of) 42nd Street!
Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. So the truth has come out... your profile photo is from when you were thirty.
PS: Be proud of your age. Every year is a bonus.

  5. HI Karen HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Monday. Now a wise man told me one day, that it is mistake when women lie about there age, they should add on 5 years and then in matter what they look like, they will always get a compliment!! Neat! If you take off years, you may really look your age adn then no compliments!! Anyhhow, I enjoed reading all yuor random facts. Have a great weekend. I am off on my hols so may not be able to comment on post when away but still hope to post.

  15. Happy Birthday, Karen. Have a great time at the Weston Playhouse. Love your list of why 50 is Nifty. Makes me want to start working on some of those things now. No kids for me, so I can skip to being comfortable just knwoing who I am and being me. What I want to do when I grow up still crosses my mind.

  16. well, being that i just turned 50, i can see some of this - although i didn't have kids, i still didn't give myself much time those years (work, commutes, etc.)

happy birthday to you, and claim every year/day you get!

  19. Happy early Birthday, Karen! Enjoy your 50's. Optimistic said that 50 is the new 32. Does that mean that 70 is the new 52? I'll take it!
    Have a great weekend.

  20. Happy Birthday! I just turned 50 for the 3rd time. It's a great age. I especially agree with #5 - It's so freeing to give up trying to control things beyond my control. Have a great 50th year - again!

  21. Hey 73 is really good! Try it sometime. I like the one about finding out who you are at fifty. I would guess you not only found out who you are but liked who you found.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well Happy 50...again. And 70 isn't so bad either!!

  23. I LOVE the idea of staying the same age! I am going to pick 45, since that is what I am right now. It seems a nice balanced age. The numbers look good together, and I am mostly living my life the way I want to, including being retired :) If I don't remember to email you on Monday to say Happy Birthday I will say it now "Happy Birthday my friend, enjoy 50 for another year!"

  24. Awww, happy early birthday! I must say you don't look like you are 50 - you age very well! Hope you have a great pre-birthday weekend :)

Happy Birthday, Karen, and I hope you enjoy many more!

  30. Yup! All your facts were great but I'm really right there with you on #3. Now when people ask how I' like retirement, I tell them I've finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. :-D

  31. What a great post....and a big Happy Birthday to you on Monday....People can talk about youth all they want but the 50's and so far the 60's are the best....I am having a ball, loving life, free to be me and always open to adventures....I can't wait to hear all that's in your future and see your wonderful times through your great photographs.....You really are a jewel and I am so glad to have met you through blogging....

  32. I turned 50 eight years ago....and I don't want to stay 50. I like 58 better. I hope to like 60 and 70....and 80....maybe 90? Doubt 100, but if I get there, I'm sure I can find something good about it! Good for you that you have come to terms with aging...because the alternative is much worse!

  33. I hate trying to remember the year exactly. I think you have the right idea staying at the whole number. :)
Since retiring my style has been jeans and a t-shirt - it's me.
I won't be around on Monday because I have some Grandson sitting so I'll wish you a very Happy Birthday now with lots of joy and wishes come true!

  34. pfft you look too young to be fifty... i'd say 35...a very confident 35 ;)

  38. Happy birthday, Karen! I agree with all your observations! I do think getting older is wonderfully freeing. It's a wonderful time of life! I am almost through my 50's and looking forward to my golden 60's and still feel like a teenager (except when I first get out of bed! he he) Hugs, xo

  40. I guess great minds think alike! I, too, felt compelled to write in a blog post about my 50s. I'm 54, and this is my favorite decade! Happy birthday, and enjoy the richness to come!

  41. Birthday wishes to you, Karen, and for staying 50 as long as you can. Passed that number, some 14 years ago myself even though I tried to keep it around. But then perhaps I would not have been able to say the retire wo1 if I had and being retired IS a great thing. Hope you enjoyed the play, musicals are always good things to help with celebrations.

  42. Happy Birthday Karen! I hope your next lap around 50 is even more fun than the last. You never cease to make me smile!
