District 10
Wow - I really do not know where this week has gone.
frazzled...
I am so looking forward to this weekend - maybe (hopefully) a little skiing.
At this point, I'd probably be happy to sit and read...
Anyway -
Remember my quest for the 14 one-room schoolhouses of Jamaica, Vermont?
This one was easy -
it hides in plain sight - looking onto what is now one of the main roads through Vermont.

Students were still attending school here until 1960.

Every year for the past 97 years, the Rawson family has gathered here for its annual reunion -
complete with a family meeting, dessert contest, and a chorus of "My Country 'Tis of Thee"
- as well as a family photo taken at the grave of Bailey Rawson, the first settler and founder of this little part of Jamaica.
Under a shady tree and surrounded by this little fence.
So - one down, and I've found a second one (need a couple more photos of it)

sweet little place. glad that founding family still gathers there each year.
ReplyDeleteQuaint and lovely.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteLove snow scenes!
I love places like this, I really like that top shot. My husband went to a small school, there were only 23 kids in his 8th grade class.
ReplyDeleteoh how i enjoyed this post! love that they still hold reunions! ok, now off to the next!
ReplyDeleteLove how the school has been left in its original condition!
ReplyDeleteThis one reminds me of some that existed when I was growing up. My bus passed two one room schools that were open until the late 60's. My parents sent me into town to the county school. I sometimes wish I could have attended one of the others.
Love that vintage looking fence!
Looking forward to seeing the rest of what you find - good luck!
Cool that your one room schools survived closure. Where I come from they were abandoned. They had not been well kept up so they soon fell apart. I'll be watching for the next one.
ReplyDeleteHow neat to find such an old schoolhouse and know the history of it! I really like the fence that surrounds the grave...it's got such intricate detailing. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting "quest"...hope you are successful! This one is very interesting with the nearby grave. Love the way the sun slants through the trees onto the snow!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little school house. My husband's sister bought an old school house and turned it into her home. So nice to see this one still being used and the old grave still tended to. Hope you find all your schoolhouses. I am your newest follower. xx
ReplyDeleteGreat little school building. Nice theme to photograph. Before you know they are all disappeared.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots. Aren't old cemeteries fascinating?

Nice place and photo!
ReplyDeleteGreat photography of history ~ ^_^
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shot of this old schoolhouse. On the first one, you have captured some lovely lighting and the composition is very nice. Just imagine the children coming to this school and huddling around a pot belly stove to get warmed up in the winter time!
ReplyDeleteInteresting blog and project♫ My Top Shot: http://lore-eleven.blogspot.com/2013/02/fun-with-sundials.html
ReplyDeleteThe story behind this was interesting. The schoolhouse was fascinating along with snow!
ReplyDeleteThe picture is filled with history ... The upper one looks like a school house from an old film I saw a while ago ... the white, wooden horisontal planks - beautiful! I also like a lot your last picture, the fence, stone and the tree.
ReplyDeleteA disappearing part of our country's history. You are smart to try and capture them now. xo
ReplyDeleteQuite a unique place and nice that the family still gathers at the school for the annual reunions. I also enjoyed the walk you took on your lunch break earlier this week, Kearn. It wseems that somehow we "see" more things while carrying a camera.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find; these captures are awesome and the snow just enhances the beauty all the more....
